IT Automation Specialist

POSITION: IT Automation Specialist





General Responsibilities:

This position handles emergency calls as directed and performs troubleshooting to resolve problems, referring more complex problems to supervisor. This position acts as the department expert in troubleshooting network problems. This position has the responsibility for larger and/or multiple jobs, greater technical skills, and additional customer interaction than the Specialist I position.

Direction: General Supervision




50%   Administers customer network and performs server management.

  • Back up & store panels with database and initial check out.
  • Trouble shoots programs written by engineers.
  • Works with customers IT system to facilitate BCS systems installations and service.
  • Makes recommendations to superior regarding changes, improvements or installation of automation system on basis of own findings in the course of assignment.
  • Develops project information (e.g. system and cabinet layouts, database, submittal cut sheets, etc.) using given software to meet sales intent of the project.
  • Review start-up check out and commissioning of installed systems once systems are 100% complete by the design engineer.
  •  Verifies trend information is setup for all systems.
  •  Compare trends to given sequence to verify proper operation of systems.
  •  Perform DEM calculation checks
  •  Verifies Alarm information is setup for all systems.
  •  Verifies schedules are in place and meet owner’s expectations.
  •  Reviews system graphics to insure they meet company standards
  •  Assists with startup, certification and project turnover.
  •  Ensures work quality on projects.
  •  Collects signed documentation (by the owner) of work completed.
  •  Reviews action item lists and PTP checkout sheets.

40%   Provides customer service by responding to services calls to build and maintain customer relationships.

  • Presents a professional image of Building Controls and Services when speaking to customers (all levels).
  • If improper operation is due to another component of the automation system rather than the company’s product, discusses problem with customer and advises of best course of action to accomplish correction of trouble, and/or contacts service department of manufacturer of faulty component involved to arrange for service.    
  • Disconnects and dismantles instruments as necessary and corrects trouble or defect by adjusting, repairing or replacing parts or units.
  • Diagnoses trouble or defects in sensors, field panels, or control consoles and determines corrective action.
  • Responds to customer service calls, checks indicated points of trouble, and analyzes full requirements of system involved and checks and tests system components.
  • Handles emergency service calls as directed.

10% Provides technical assistance and training as needed.

  • Delivers technical support to end users and field labor when applicable.
  • Conducts onsite customer training when needed.




  • High school diploma or equivalent

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum five years of experience in an IT field.
  • Strong knowledge of automation systems, HVAC and electrical concepts and operations.  
  • Proficient in job start-up, checkout, programming, graphics and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in running conduit for installation of controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Strong math skills

  • Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to evaluate urgency of situation and prioritize tasks.

Other Requirements

  • May require overtime, evening or weekend work 
  • Requires travel to and from job sites, some may be out of town
  • Requires occasional overnight stays

Physical Requirements

Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, balancing, twisting, and reaching with hands and arms on a regular basis. Frequently requires the ability to squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Requires the ability to carry, lift, move or push up to 100 pounds on a regular basis, and over 100 pounds occasionally. Must be able to talk and listen to others. Uses hands or fingers to handle of feel on a regular basis. Frequent use of manual dexterity and visualization of a computer screen through the day. Requires ability to see up close and distant, distinguish colors, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

This position regularly works primarily at job sites in all types of indoor and outdoor conditions including near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, extreme heat, cold and humidity. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic fumes or chemicals and vibration. Risk of electrical shock is also part of the work environment. Regular noise levels range from moderate to very loud.

Most of the job duties require the employee to be working on HVAC equipment in close quarters. Most testing is done with the equipment operating, creating noise and air movement. Many of our customer facilities have unfavorable environmental conditions. Some job duties require the employee to work with computers and electronic media on a regular basis.
