Technical Service Advisor (TSA)

POSITION: Technical Service Advisor
DEPARTMENT: Operations
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt

SUMMARY:

General Responsibilities:

The Technical Service Advisor acts as the department expert in troubleshooting, installation, and mechanical procedures. Assists in skill and product knowledge development of co-workers, customers, and contractors. Coordinates with Project Manager/Coordinators/Engineers on all projects when assistance is necessary. Acts as technical liaison to co-workers, contractors and customers on products represented & distributed by BCS. Manages projects where BCS represented equipment are having issues to bring resolution to the situation.

Reports to: Service Manager
Direct reports: None

Direction:

  • Minimal supervision.
  • Requires self-motivation.
  • Provides guidance to contractors, customers and co-workers.

Major Responsibilities:

50% Performs mechanical system inspections and troubleshooting.

  • Works with Project Manager (PM) to shadow them during job site service/warranty related visits.
  • Advises supervisor of any necessary modifications, changes, or upgrades to mechanical systems on basis of own findings in the course of assignment.
  • Completes and submits written reports covering all aspects of each assignment, including customer, nature of trouble, equipment involved, time and material used, travel, work to be completed and any other expenses.
  • Delivers inspection reports and notifies customer/contractor of necessary steps to resolve.
  • Manages issue related projects to resolution.
  • Receives troubleshooting calls, both internal and external, and arranges on-site visits with contractors as requested.
  • Understands and adheres to the safety rules and regulations outlined in the BCS safety manual.

40% Field work.

  • Fulfills a Mechanical Service Technician role as needed.
  • Assists in mentoring and coaching as needed.

10% Recommends product and knowledge enhancement opportunities to ensure BCS technicians and customers have the desired technical product options and expertise.

  • Stays current with new documentation as distributed from manufacturers and changes internal records and distributes to necessary BCS contacts.
  • Studies product manuals/brochures, training materials, etc.
  • Researches and tests new products, software, devices before rolling out into field.
  • Coordinates and follows up with manufacturers when needed for information on product knowledge or repairs.
  • Navigates through vendor websites to gather documentation for any BCS represented equipment.
  • Attends manufacturer training as needed.
  • Performs training as necessary to assist the Training Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum five years of experience in an HVAC capacity.
  • Minimum five years of experience in a mechanical capacity.
  • Minimum five years of experience in systems including on-the-job experience as a systems/mechanical specialist.
  • Strong knowledge of building automation systems, HVAC, mechanical systems, electrical concepts, and operations.
  • Advance knowledge of Controls, Boilers and Chillers.
  • Advance knowledge of refrigeration and roof top equipment.
  • Ability to read building plans.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Mathematical abilities to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration, and percent and create and interpret graphs.
  • Strong problem-solving ability.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid driver license
  • Block journeyman or master mechanical license
  • EPA universal refrigeration handling certificate
  • Other Technical school certificate

Other Requirements

  • Requires frequent travel through Kansas and the Midwest
  • Requires occasional overnight stays

Training and development:

  • Completes at minimum, 8 hours of continuing education on an annual basis as required to maintain license.

Physical Requirements

Requires frequent standing, walking, climbing of stairs or ladders, bending, squatting or twisting. Requires the ability to carry, lift, move or push up to 100 pounds on a regular basis. Must be able to talk and listen to others. Frequent use of manual dexterity and visualization of a computer screen through the day. Requires ability to see up close and distant, distinguish colors, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
